BENIN : Testing an improved Extra-Medical Management of Tuberculosis Patients

General objective :
Evaluate the effectiveness of the social protection program for TB patients treated at CNHU-PPC in 2024.

Specific objectives :

  • Describe the effectiveness of a social protection program on the psychological and nutritional status of TB patients;
  • Describe the effectiveness of a social protection program on the quality of life of TB patients and their families;
  • Describe the effectiveness of a social protection program on TB treatment compliance;Describe the effectiveness of a social protection program on the socio-professional reintegration of TB patients.

Method :

Participants will receive support in three areas. The first will consist of psycho-social reinforcement of the patient, the second of nutritional support and education, and the third of financial empowerment through job training and reintegration.
A prospective case-control study will be carried out. It will include a quantitative and a qualitative component, and will take place at the CNHU-PPC in Cotonou, the country’s largest TB management center. The study will focus on TPB+ adult TB patients, of whom 20 cases and 40 controls will be recruited. Participants will be selected for convenience from among new TB cases detected at the center. The intervention will last for 1 year and will be based on 3 main components: psychosocial support (6 months), nutritional support (6 months), support for professional integration (6 months to 1 year depending on the training chosen by the beneficiary). Patients will also benefit from cash transfer-type financial support (6 months).

Progress :
The study has been approved by the ethics committee, and professional training centers for the socio-professional reintegration of beneficiaries have been identified. Patient recruitment is underway.
